Report: Paris Saint-Germain Interested in Signing USMNT Defender

After weeks of reading about the same players linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain this offseason, we finally have a new name to drool over.

We know that right-back is a priority for the club with Thomas Meunier set to leave at the end of the season. Colin Dagba and Thilo Kehrer both remain in the squad but the position could certainly use an injection of new talent.

According to journalist Mike Verweij, Ajax’s Sergiño Dest is a player that PSG is interested in but they’ll face stiff competition from several other top clubs, including FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and FC Barcelona.

Bayern Munich was thought to be the most likely to land the 19-year-old who chose to play for the United States Men’s National Team over the Netherlands, but with the coronavirus impacting clubs financially, all talks involving Dest have been put on hold.

Dest would be an ideal signing for PSG. His pricetag, which Transfermarkt rates at €18 million, is reasonable considering his upside. There’s the marketing aspect of signing an American international. With Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé, PSG already sells a ton of jerseys in the states but adding one of the best American players to the roster would add fuel to the fire.

On the pitch, Dest has UEFA Champions League experience and being able to play right and left-back is vital for PSG who are all too often hit with injuries. Manager Thomas Tuchel loves versatile players (Marquinhos moving to the defensive midfield position, for example) and Dest seems like a player the German would enjoy coaching.

Ajax is a team that will sell their best players so a deal is certainly possible. It will be up to Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, that Dest should bring his talents to the French capital.
