Former PSG Midfielder Takes a Deep Dive on Whether Icardi Has Met Expectations With the Club This Year

Paris Saint-Germain forward Mauro Icardi has had an up-and-down year so far. The Argentine has produced well in Ligue 1 play, but he failed to score a goal in the UEFA Champions League competition in 2020; he failed to find the back of the net in last season’s knockout stage and also this season’s group stage.

Former PSG midfielder Eric Rabesandratana has closely followed Icardi this year, and he is unsure on whether the club made the right choice to sign him on a permanent transfer deal. Rabesandratana reviewed Icardi’s year for PSG in speaking to France Bleu Paris.

“I wanted to make an update on Icardi,” Rabesandratana said. “What becomes of him? He cost €50 million. In 2019-2020, he had made 27 matches [in Ligue 1 and the Champions League] for 17 goals. And then in 2020, it’s five matches and two goals in 353 minutes of play. We have very little chance of seeing him again in 2020. €50 million for five matches is expensive, €10 million per match. We ask ourselves questions, but luckily we have recovered Kean to compensate for Icardi’s absences in the attack.

“Icardi is a big question. Was he a good operation? We still remember that his goal average is 20 per season. He’s still a good player, but you still have to watch.”

For the moment, Icardi is not expected to feature for PSG for the rest of the calendar year due to an adductor injury. After a sluggish first half of the season from Icardi, PSG sure hopes to see the Argentine provide a vital impact over the remainder of the campaign.
