Why Renato Sanches Opted to Join PSG Amid Interest from AC Milan

Paris Saint-Germain was in the middle of a battle with AC Milan to land midfielder Renato Sanches. Ultimately the Portuguese would elect to remain in France and reunite with sporting advisor Luis Campos and manager Christophe Galtier.

Sanches spoke with Canal Football Club (via Canal Supporters), where he discussed his decision to join PSG over other possible destinations, such as AC Milan. The midfielder explained the project in Paris appealed to the Portuguese leading him to choose the capital club.

“PSG is a club that I could have joined several times, but it never materialized, especially when I was playing in Germany,” Sanches said. “It was really my desire to play in France and at PSG.”

“I’m sure it’s a good choice that I made because regardless of everything, the project is good. I know the people who are here, I know the sporting director, the coach, it doesn’t mean anything, but it helps.”

The Portugal international joined the current Ligue 1 champions for a transfer fee of €15 million that went the other way to Lille OSC. Sanches would make his first appearance on Saturday against Montpellier Hérault SC.

Sanches came on as a substitute in the 5-2 win, and Nuno Mendes provided a pass to the midfielder who would score his first goal to start the new venture in the French capital on the right foot.
