PSG Owners Purchase Significant Shares of Portuguese Club

Qatar Sports Investment is growing its portfolio of football clubs as the Paris Saint-Germain owners announced in a press release the acquisition of 21.67 percent of the share capital of the Portuguese club Braga.

“The execution of the share purchase agreement has been disclosed to the Securities Market Commission of Portugal and to the market,” the press release said (h/t RMC Sport).

“The closing of the acquisition of the shares of SC Braga by QSI will take place in the coming months, subject to certain closing conditions.”

The information doesn’t indicate what QSI plans to do with this new venture and how it will affect PSG. Nonetheless, it should allow the capital club to funnel young talent they are high on to gain first-team experience.

Additionally, the acquisition of Braga indicates that the Qataris ownership doesn’t plan on jumping ship from football once the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has come and gone.

Braga president Antonio Salvador is welcoming the new ownership group that will allow for the Portuguese side to drastically improve its team with the new funds it will have and its disposal.

“The extraordinary experience of Qatar Sports Investments – with its global expertise, its foresight and its record of extraordinary results in sport and business – will bring enormous value and help us achieve our ambitious plans,” Salvador said.

Furthermore, Braga might be challenging Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting CP for the Portuguese championship in the future once the purchase of their shares is complete.
