Ander Herrera Breaks Silence on Controversial Whistling of Messi by PSG Fans

The Lionel Messi era at Paris Saint-Germain ended after the 3-2 loss to Clermont Foot on Saturday at the Parc des Princes. Messi’s time with the French giants was less than perfect, resulting in boos and whistles.

Former PSG midfielder Ander Herrera spoke with ESPN (h/t TNT Sports Argentina), revealing that he was surprised when capital club supporters booed the 35-year-old on various occasions during his two seasons in Paris.

“I was very surprised that Messi was whistled at PSG,” Herrera said. “In the end, the one who whistles is the one who pays his subscription and has the right to do so, but it surprises me. I spent a year with him and he is the best I have seen, also as a guy, his way of being.”

Nonetheless, Herrera spoke about being Messi’s teammate during the 2021-22 season and highlighted the qualities that he saw in the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner that stood out to him.

“I admired him even more before and after. Paris is special, it seems that it is never enough, it is the only team in Europe where if You don’t win the Champions League, the season is a failure …

“Messi doesn’t need to make you feel it, there are people who lead by example, by the way they act and develop themselves. Leo is a silent leader, he doesn’t need to talk a lot to know if you have to give it to him or that he is the important one inside of the team.”

Messi will now look to examine his options as he enters free agency when his contract expires on June 30. However, it seems the Argentine will sign a pre-contract before his deal with PSG officially ends.

Currently, the potential landing spots appear Al-Hilal and Inter Miami, but FC Barcelona is attempting to convince Messi and his camp to be patient. The Spanish club has to offload players as their financial package will reportedly get the green light.
