PSG May Have to Defeat Spain’s Best to Win Champions League

For over a decade, Qatar Sports Investments has invested in Paris Saint-Germain with one goal in mind: to win the UEFA Champions League.

The club has come close. In 2020, PSG reached the final against FC Bayern Munich but lost 1-0 thanks to a goal by their former player, Kingsley Coman. Four years later, PSG is in the quarter-finals of the tournament, and while other football fans want to know how to get UCL tickets to see Arsenal and Manchester City, PSG supporters are looking to follow their club through a potential gauntlet that includes the best clubs from La Liga.

Up first will be FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals, which begins on April 10, at the Parc des Princes. These are two sides that are very familiar with each other and there’s a lot of bad blood between the two as well. From Barcelona’s 6-1 comeback in 2017, to PSG signing Neymar Jr. away from them shortly after and defeating them in the Champions League in 2021, there’s no love lost.

PSG will be favored against Barcelona, and if they can advance past the Catalan club, they could face Atletico Madrid, who will be favored in their tie against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals. Atletico Madrid is known for its defensive style of play, whereas PSG possesses one of the best attacks in Europe, led by Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé.

Should PSG advance past Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League, they’ll move to the final where Real Madrid could be waiting. Los Blancos will have a difficult run to the final if they are to make it. They’ll play Manchester City in the quarter-finals, then either Arsenal FC or Bayern Munich in the semi-final. While this isn’t the most talented Real Madrid side we’ve seen in recent years, we know their pedigree in this tournament and we also know their luck when it comes to getting favorable decisions from officials.

A PSG vs. Real Madrid final would easily be one of the most watched finals in recent memory. Mbappé grew up a supporter of the Spanish club, and recent reports indicate that he has made the decision to leave PSG at the end of the season and join Real Madrid. An opportunity to deliver a Champions League title to his hometown club by defeating the club he expects to join a month later would have football fans tuning in from all around the world.

Not only could this pathway lead to a Champions League title, it will also set up Mbappé for his future in La Liga, having already defeated the best that league has to offer in the tournament.
