Should Paris Saint-Germain Sign Alphonso Davies

The days of superstar signings may be in Paris Saint-Germain’s rearview mirror, but they could be forced to splash the cash on one of the best defenders in Europe.

Nuno Mendes is PSG’s unquestioned starter at left-back. However, he hasn’t played since last April due to an injury, and he just recently had surgery that will keep him out for four additional months. Lucas Hernández has stepped in admirably, but he’s not the speedy attacking threat that Nuno Mendes is. While it may not have favorable odds, according to sportsbook reviews Canada, PSG should turn its attention to Alphonso Davies at FC Bayern Munich.

The Canada international burst onto the scene when he joined the German superclub from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in 2019. The 22-year-old Davies is now considered one of the best left-backs in Europe. So, why would Bayern be open to moving on from Davies?

The fact of the matter is a transfer for Davies will be difficult but not impossible. His current contract at Bayern Munich runs until June 30, 2025, meaning that a decision about his future really needs to be sorted out now. The reigning Bundesliga champions would prefer he sign an extension now, but if that isn’t going to happen, Bayern Munich would likely have to entertain the idea of accepting a transfer fee for one of their best players.

Already, Manchester City and Real Madrid are lining up to convince Davies to join their team. Both are in desperate need of a left-back, but so are PSG. We don’t know whether Nuno Mendes will return to his previous form, and after nearly a year out of action, it’s difficult to say he will be the same player. Marquinhos continues to make mistakes in big matches for PSG, so he may be departing next summer as well, with Hernández slotting into the center-back position next to Milan Škriniar. Signing Davies would allow Nuno Mendes to take his time coming back into the squad and provide competition for him as well for playing time.

If PSG decides to make a move for Davies, it will take a significant transfer fee to complete the deal. Working in their favor could be the departure of Kylian Mbappé. While he would likely leave on a free transfer, it would reduce the club’s wage bill and there could be some bonuses that would come back to the club as well. PSG could reinvest the savings into a player like Davies, but there’s another Ligue 1 player they could target to make his arrival a little more comfortable.

Jonathan David at Lille OSC has consistently been one of the best attackers in the French top flight. He also happens to be teammates with Davies on the Canada national team. PSG could try to replace Mbappé’s goal output with David while also using his influence to lure Davies to the French capital.

As always with PSG, marketing plays a huge role, and having two Canada national team players would be ideal if the club was thinking of heading to North America for a pre-season tour.

Keep an eye on the rumor mill in the coming months to see if PSG puts this plan into action.
