Roma’s Jose Mourinho Drops Cryptic Hint Targeting PSG’s Renato Sanches

Paris Saint-Germain loaned out Renato Sanches to AS Roma this past summer transfer window. The capital club hoped the Portugal international would find his previous Lille OSC form with consistent playing time.

However, that hasn’t been the case. In the months that Sanches has been with the Serie A side, injuries have plagued his ability to stay fit. As a result, the midfielder might not be making the impact he’d desired when receiving this fresh start.

Is Renato Sanches’ time at AS Roma going from bad to worse?

Furthermore, Jose Mourinho might be taking an indirect shot at Sanches. The Portuguese manager didn’t mention names but put some players on notice, threatening their playing time.

“From now on, there will be people who will only go into the field when the others are dead,” Mourinho told reporters (h/t Le10Sport). “Someone missed an opportunity this time.”

The Italian media is speculating that Houssem Aouar, Zeki Çelik, and Sanches were the targets of these remarks. So, unless the PSG midfielder has a revelation in the second half of this 2023-24 season, it’s hard to envision Sanches staying there long-term.

To remind everyone, if Sanches plays in 55 percent of the team’s matches during the loan period, Roma will be obligated to buy him for a fee of €11 million. On the other hand, if he takes the field in 75 percent of Roma’s games, the purchase obligation rises to €14 million.
